George E. Lovegrove, M.D. is the founder and medical director of the West Virginia Vein & Skin Centers. Dr. Lovegrove is a native West Virginian who received his M.D. degree from West Virginia University. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Charleston Area Medical Center and the University of South Carolina. Board certified in Internal Medicine, he practiced internal medicine in Beckley, W. V. for 15 years. In 1998, he made a career change and opened a new office in Beckley for the non-surgical treatment of varicose veins, rosacea, vascular skin abnormalities including Port-Wine birthmarks and hemangiomas. He was the first to introduce Yag laser and Intense Pulse Light treatments in the state. In 2000, he was the first to introduce PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) for the treatment of actinic keratosis which has now become a first line treatment for acne disorders.
However, his real passion has been directed in the non-surgical treatment of varicose veins. Being a real pioneer in the new speciality termed Phlebology, he then introduced EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment) in his Beckley office. He received his formal training in EVLT at Cornell University-Weil Medical School in New York under the direction of Robert Min, M.D. Dr. Min is the leading authority and is world renown in Endovenous Laser Treatment. What started out as a single physician practice in Beckley, W.V. has now become the largest EVLT center in the United States with the opening of the Charleston location in 2004. Dr. Lovegrove now has two physician associates including Dr. Donald Teter, and Dr. Rickey Bradley. Tammy King, a certified nurse practicioner, is also a very important team member. All physicians are Board Certified and recognized in the speciality of Phlebology. Dr. Lovegrove also is a clinical instructor for Diomed and actively teaches the EVLT procedure to colleagues. At this time, over 16,000 procedures have been performed at both locations.
Dr. Lovegrove and his associates are still the only location in West Virginia performing EVLT by Diomed. Patients travel from all over the state as well as Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and other nearby states to have procedures performed. In addition to EVLT, other non-surgical varicose vein treatments include traditional sclerotherapy, ultra-sound guided catheter directed foam sclerotherapy, Yag laser for reticular veins and intense pulse light for the small cosmetic "spider veins". All diagnostic ultrasounds and duplex scans are performed by the physicians in the office. There is no need for any out-patient or hospital visits. The staff performs all of the necessary insurance pre-certification for the patient. The center is a contract provider for all major insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid.
