First, your doctor uses ultrasound imaging to localize the vein to be treated. After a local anesthetic to the skin area, a small catheter and laser fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point and advanced to the faulty valve in the vein to be treated. Laser energy is then delivered to the inside of the vein to seal off the varicose vein.
Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged. Normal daily activity can be resumed (just avoid rigorous activities, such as gym workouts). There may be minor soreness and bruising. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter, non-aspirin pain relievers. Compression stockings will be worn for seven days following the procedure. A follow-up visit will be scheduled in 2 weeks to confirm the treated vein has been closed by the procedure.
